Alleghany County School Enrichment Programs
4-H and local schools, both public and private, team up to offer classroom enrichment programs. The Alleghany County 4-H Extension Agent provides educational materials, resources and training to classroom teachers.
The 4-H Embryology Program is for 3rd grade classrooms. Through this program, students learn about animal develoopment as they incubate and hatch chicks in their class. Alleghany County 4-H provides curriculum and fertile eggs for each class. Teachers interested in this experience need to contact the 4-H Extension Agent for training dates and location. Only 3rd grade teachers who have been trained to use this curriculum may loan embryology materials.
River’s Edge is a 4-H program developed for use by 5th grade classes to learn about soil and water. The program consists of a short story, youth activity sheets and a leader’s curriculum guide. These combine to provide high quality experiential learning opportunities through which youth develop their knowledge and skills in not only the sciences of soil and water, but also the environment in general.
Down to Earth
Through this hands-on, minds-on program, 6th grade students get the basics of botany, the gist of gardening and the essentials of ecology. Students will use gardening to stimulate their senses and cultivate science process skills and life-skills. By gathering data using the scientific method, students will grow a sense of pride and responsibility.
