Forest Resources

Nearly 60 percent of North Carolina's 33 million acres is considered forestland. North Carolina Cooperative Extension works in partnership with other agencies to provide research-based educational programs that help young people, landowners, foresters, natural resource managers and others understand and make wise use of valuable forest resources.

Don't Top That Tree! Many people think a tree needs to be topped. This is a terrible practice for many reasons. Topping puts a tree into shock, by removing the crown of a tree it can upset an older tree's well developed crown to root ratio and temporarily cuts off its food making ability. Some people believe that topping their trees will control it's height and spread. Actually it has the opposite effect.
