Backyard Poultry & Pasture Pork Workshops Scheduled
North Carolina Cooperative Extension, along with NC Choices, will be hosting two workshops in May for small flock poultry owners and pasture pork producers. The Regional Small Flock Poultry Owner Seminar will be held 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. This seminar is open to future flock owners, as well as to beginners or those wanting additional information regarding raising their birds for meat or eggs. Topics for the seminar include: choosing and purchasing a breed, how to keep your flock healthy, NC laws pertaining to poultry owners and egg sales, using forages as a supplement, early care of your flock, and how to process your chickens which will include information on the NC meat laws.
The registration fee for the Regional Small Flock Poultry Owner Seminar is $10, which includes all materials and lunch. You must pre-register online by May 2. This workshop will be held at the Forsyth County Extension Office in Winston-Salem.
The Pasture Porkshop will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 25. This workshop is geared for any pork producer who is interested in learning more about raising pigs on pasture. Topics include: alternative feeds; cost effective infrastructure, welfare, and best management practices; determining costs and capital investments; improving silvopasture systems; and determine markets, scale, and the right mix for your farm.
The registration fee for the Pasture Porkshop is $35, which includes all materials, lunch, and snacks. The first 25 paid participants will receive a space in the pork demo class. You must register online by May 18. This workshop will be held at the Forsyth County Extension Office in Winston-Salem.
