Are you interested in sharing your knowledge with others? If so, you should become an Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer in Sampson County (EMGV)!
Extension Master Gardener volunteers are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn, and enjoy helping others. They are able to communicate with diverse groups of people to discuss their love and knowledge of gardening.
What really sets EMGV’s apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture and their willingness to educate others. EMGV’s work through their county Cooperative Extension office to provide the public with unbiased, research-based information on gardens, lawns, and landscapes.
Is the Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteer program for you? To help you decide, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I want to learn more about the care of plants?
- Am I eager to participate in a practical training program?
- Do I enjoy spending time with other garden enthusiasts?
- Do I have time to take and complete the 16-week training?
- Do I like sharing my knowledge and love of plants with others?
To learn more about the Extension Master Gardener volunteer program, come to an informational meeting at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Sampson County Center, 55 Agriculture Place, Clinton, NC. At the meeting, you will have a chance to meet current Extension Master Gardener volunteers and get answers to any questions you may have about the EMGV program in Sampson County.
The EMGV initial training course will be offered at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Sampson County Center in Clinton. Classes are taught by the Extension Staff, local experts, and EMGV’s. Topics include the basics of lawn care, landscaping, vegetable and flower gardens, environmental stewardship, insect, disease, and weed management. The 16-week course begins Wednesday, July 24. Classes are every Wednesday from 9 a.m.–noon. The cost of the course, including textbooks, field trips, and materials is $150.00.

Class On Fire Ant Management
The red imported fire ant has become more than a nuisance for homeowners in Southeastern North Carolina. It seems that every time we, our children, or our pets go outside, that we are at risk of becoming a victim of a dozen or more of these unwanted invaders of our properties. Not only are we at risk outside, but many reports have been made of fire ants moving into storage buildings, under concrete pads, and even into residential homes and commercial properties in our area. Total control of this pest is difficult at best, due to a lack of community-wide effort, reproductive lifecycle of the ant, and the ant’s ability to live in areas difficult to treat, such as forests, right of ways, and fields. Our best effort as homeowners, are to try and control the fire ant population on our own properties, to minimize contact and avoid the painful stings they deliver.
To learn more about fire ants and how to manage them on your property, the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Sampson County Center is partnering with the Sampson-Clinton Public Library to offer a class on fire ant management. The class will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, and will be held at the Sampson-Clinton Public Library, 217 Graham Street, Clinton NC 28328. This class is free to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
