Registration Open for Davidson County Chicken Project

— Written By

The Davidson County Chicken Project is an opportunity for youth (ages 5-18, as of January 1) to learn more about the poultry industry. Through this project, youth will raise laying hens. Youth will be required to complete a record book that outlines the care of their chicken and their knowledge learned about chickens. This fall, youth will participate in a Chicken Show, where they will demonstrate to the judge their knowledge of the bird.

Training for this project will be provided through three workshops held weekly in March 2020 (March 12, 19, and 26). The workshops will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held at the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Davidson County office, 301 E. Center St., Lexington. The youth and a parent must attend all three workshops to be able to participate in the project.

Youth will receive up to six chicks in April. Participants will raise the chicks until the date of the show under the supervision of their parents. Participants will be responsible for all expenses incurred while raising the chicks including, but not limited to:  feed, housing, equipment, etc.

The cost to participate in the project is $15 per child. Registration forms and payment are due by Thursday, February 13 to be eligible to participate.

If you know of a youth who would like to participate or would like information regarding additional youth livestock events, contact Sara Drake, Davidson County Livestock Extension Agent, at (336) 242-2082.
